About

The California Agricultural Teachers’ Induction Program (CATIP) sprang out of the need to induct new agriculture teachers into the dynamic field of agriculture education as identified by the Vision 2030 process of the California Agricultural Teachers’ Association (CATA) that began in 2013.  CATIP is a consortium built for the purpose of providing alternative services meant to support and mentor California Agriculture Teachers in their first two years.  As a formal partnership between Sutter County Superintendent of Schools (SCSOS) and the CATA, CATIP inducts preliminary agriculture teachers into the profession through the requirements set forth by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CCTC). CATIP provides relevant mentoring and support for early career agriculture teachers through a combination of programs from Tri-County Induction Program (TCIP), CTE Teach (Website), and the network and professional development of the California Agricultural Teachers’ Association.

The California Agricultural Teachers’ Induction Program is meant to be a two-year program, for those electing to begin and complete induction services in the program.  The general program structure follows this approximate timeline for credential candidates (CC).

Pre-Program

  1. Completion of a Teacher Preparation Program (California Preparation Programs),
  2. Completion of EdTPA, PACT, or other relevant form of teacher performance assessment,
  3. Fulfill the requirements for a Preliminary California Teaching Credential;**
    • Agriculture Specialist
    • Single Subject: Agriculture
  4. Become employed,
  5. Apply to CATIP (CC Application), and
  6. Gain documented consent of participation with CC’s school district.

Year 1

  1. Credential Candidates engage with a Mentor,
  2. Individualized Learning Plan (ILP) #1 (from outcome of teacher performance assessment),
  3. Conduct an on-site Administrator Meeting,
  4. Engage in Professional Development coordinated through CATIP,
    • CATA Summer Conference (June)
    • CATA Region Meetings/Roadshows (1 - Fall and 1 - Spring)
    • New Professionals Institute (November)

Admission Requirements:

  1. Verification of Preliminary Single Subject or Agriculture Specialist Credential
    • Verification of teaching outside of California, if less than two years.
  2. Valid Contract of Employment
  3. Verification of CBEST or Basic Skills Requirement (BSR) test(s).
  4. Verify Certificate of Clearance from CTC.
  5. Portfolio of Progress
    • If entering the program after starting a program at another LEA (Local Education Agency).
    • Includes all work completed under the guidance of former Induction Program.

FAQ:

  1. How do I apply to participate in the program?
  2. Who is considered a Credential Candidate?
    • A Credential Candidate is considered anyone who will be entering their first or second year of teaching as teacher of record.
  3. Who is Considered a Mentor?
    • A Mentor is any individual who has been teaching (1.0 FTE/year) as a qualified agriculture teacher in, or beyond their 5th year as teacher of record.
    • Mentors are trained via the curriculum outlined by the CATIP Mentor training modules.
  4. What do I do if my mentor is not providing me the guidance I need?
    • As a CC, if your mentor is not providing the services that they have been trained to provide for you, you have the right, and obligation, to inform program staff, coordinators, and/or directors.  All information provided will remain anonymous, and CATIP will work to pair you with another mentor.
  5. What happens if a Credential Candidate is leaving agriculture education?
    • If an agriculture teacher leaves the profession, for whatever reason, during their time enrolled in the CATIP, proper documentation and records will be prepared to send with that candidate to a new induction program (in the event they are gainfully employed in the teaching profession within another field), or records will be kept on file for a minimum of 3 years.
  6. What type of Mentor training is available?
    • Mentor training and onboarding is required of all mentors who are approved for work in this program, regardless of years spent as a mentor for another program.  Each case will be assessed appropriately by program facilitators, and appropriate assignments will be made on a merit basis.
  7. What will happen if I do not complete required CATIP documentation at appropriate deadlines?
    • If documentation is not completed in a timely fashion, the CATIP Consortium will withhold submission of approval to the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing.  Thus prolonging the promotion of a Clear Teaching Credential.
  8. How are mentors identified?
    • Mentors are identified from the pool of over 800 agriculture instructors in the State of California; in both secondary and postsecondary institutions.  Any mentor candidate who is currently employed by a postsecondary institution more than 50% (.5 FTE) may not have been removed from the high school classroom for more than 10 academic years.
    • Mentors may also come from the pool of recently retired agriculture teachers who had proven records of effective classroom instruction.
  9. How will mentors be paid?
    • Mentors are paid by the school district of the participating teacher.  Effectively, they are hired in the manner that the participating school district deems appropriate, and paid according to their salary/stipend system.
    • CATIP does not negotiate stipends, contracts, or policies of the participating school district.
  10. How is the California Agricultural Teachers’ Induction Program evaluated?
    • CATIP is an approved consortium partner of the Tri-County Induction Program operated by Sutter County Superintendent of Schools.  Thus, it is subject to the audit procedures, purview, and evaluation by standards set forth by the parent program and the CTC.  Entities that participate in independent evaluations are as follows, listed in order of hierarchy:
      1. CTC
      2. SCSOS
      3. CATA Governing Board
